BIOGRAFIA:
Già a 12 anni partecipa a recite scolastiche e fa parte di una compagnia teatrale locale. Lascia la scuola a 15 anni per lavorare come apprendista reporter presso il giornale locale ma viene licenziato perché invece di realizzare servizi sta sempre a teatro. Seguendo la sua vocazione si iscrive nel 1957 alla Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. Debutta sul palcoscenico nel 1960 e per vent'anni lavora presso la Royal Shakespeare Company, la più prestigiosa compagnia d'arti drammatiche inglese. A metà degli anni 70 alterna il palcoscenico teatrale con presenze in serie e miniserie televisive. La prima partecipazione ad un film importante è nel 1981 con Excalibur di John Boorman. Nel 1984 partecipa al disastroso Dune (1984) fallimentare film di fantascienza prodotto da De Laurentiis. È un segno del destino perché il suo ruolo più importante l'attore lo conseguirà tre anni dopo, quando nel 1987 sarà insignito dei gradi di comandante dell'Enterprise, la nave spaziale più famosa del mondo. Seguiranno numerosi film e episodi in televisione. Sei sono i film interpretati dall'attore nei panni di Jean Luc Picard ma gli amanti dei film sci-fi hanno nel 1999 un'altra buona ragione per amare Steward. Infatti a furor di popolo, vista anche la somiglianza col personaggio originale, è Charles Xavier ne X-Men (1999), ruolo che bissa nel seguito, attualmente nelle sale X-Men 2. Tra le curiosità sull'attore citiamo il fatto che la mitica pelata risale a quando aveva 19 anni, che ha tutt'ora una gatto trovato sul set di Star Trek: Next Generation (1987) e che, paradossalmente non ama molto i film d'azione e di fantascienza!
